Rick Happel and his entire crew were absolutely fantastic!! I had two complete HVAC units replaced by them. It was a two day job and they arrived each morning at 8:30am and went right to work and didn't stop until they were done each day. One crew outside installing the new A/C compressor and another crew in the attic installing the new furnace. They made sure I was in the loop as they progressed through the project and when they finished the install, they went over everything they had done. They, also, assisted in programming my two new thermostats. When they left, they took all the old equipment with them. They left my premises, both inside and out, as clean as when they arrived.
I can highly recommend Happel Mechanical for any and all of your HVAC needs.

This review is an honest account of my experience with Happel. It is not intended to target any individual but to provide a clear and sequential explanation of my interaction with the company.

I reached out to Happel on a hot afternoon, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees in Dallas. Rick answered my call and informed me of a 250 dollars emergency fee for same-day service, which I agreed to. Later that day, a technician named Sherbert or Trevor -apologies if I’m confusing his name - arrived. He informed me that my unit was low on R-410A coolant and needed a refill at 250 dollars per pound. He also emphasized the importance of scheduling a follow-up visit to check for potential leaks in the coils. I want to take a moment to commend the technician for his professionalism during the visit.

Now, to the main points of my dissatisfaction:

Cost of Coolant: Initially, the technician suggested using five pounds of coolant, but after discussing the cost per pound which, thankfully, I asked about, we agreed on two pounds to get us through until the follow-up visit. He quoted me 225 dollars for the first pound and 200 dollars for the second. However, I later found that the market price for R-410A typically ranges from 6 to 8 dollars per pound. For example, refrigerantscenter-dot-com offers a 35-pound tank of R-410A for 250 dollars, which comes out to just 7.14 dollars per pound. By comparison, I was charged an average of 212.50 dollars per pound–a markup of approximately 2876.68%. While I understand that Happel needs to make a profit, this level of markup feels excessive.

Lack of Follow-Up: On August 13th and again on August 18th, I contacted Rick via the same number we initially communicated on, inquiring about the follow-up visit that the technician recommended. Unfortunately, I never received a response. Despite reaching out to give them more business and under the direct guidance of the technician, there was no follow-up from the company. The technician mentioned that their office would contact me to schedule the follow-up, but that never happened.

This review is not intended to discourage anyone from using Happel’s services but rather to provide a fair and transparent account of my experience. It left me questioning whether the suggested follow-up was genuinely necessary or simply an attempt to generate additional work. Upon reviewing some of the lowest-rated Google reviews for Happel, I noticed that others have reported similar concerns. For instance, Daniel Choi mentioned a lack of response to texts and calls, which mirrors my experience. Additionally, Robert N. shared a troubling account where he was charged 600 dollars for adding refrigerant coolant, and the technician informed him that his inside unit had a leak and needed to be replaced. Connecting the dots here - Robert’s experience closely aligns with mine–being charged hundreds of dollars for coolant and being told there was a leak (or potential of leak, in my case). While I can’t speak to the specifics of their situations, their reviews reflect issues similar to those I encountered, raising questions about the consistency of these practices.

Rick and his team are solid. Every time I’ve used their services I have been happy with the work and the price. They are on time, reliable, friendly, and clearly communicate the issue before doing the work. Highly recommend!

On one of the hottest days! Our compressor went out so I sent pictures and all the information I could find. Rick Happel showed up with parts and had us back up and running in under an hour!

There is no other A/C + Heating company I will use. Hands down the best, most genuine, and transparent company I have ever worked with. They were able to locate problems multiple other companies completely missed.

Just used these peeps for service and reddit was RIGHT, they were really nice and my dog liked them and they fixed the years-long AC issue for so cheap. Like under-$200-cheap.

A biggie company I won't name but it rhymes with Schmaker Schmrothers told me a couple years back that it would be $thousands$ for the evaporator coil or even more to replace the whole system (not worth it, this house has maybe ten years left in it), and my god I'm relieved that's not the case right now.

Anyway as a grumpy suspicious femmwitch the vibes were good and nice and I'm happy.

We have been a customer of Happel Mechanical for several years now and the quality of service that Rick and his team provide is excellent. We recently purchased a new heating and air conditioning unit from Happel and they did a very thorough job in preparing the attic and the outside area for the installation of the system. They were able to repair my HVAC system for a fraction of what it would have cost to replace, and it’s working much better now. I consider myself lucky to live in the Lake Highlands area so that I can rely on Rick and the guys at Happel Mechanical to service my HVAC system year round. Rick has worked on both our furnace and condenser to keep them going. One winter when our furnace went out in the middle of the night, he came on a Sunday morning to get us back up and running. Rick is also priced competitively and isn't one to try and weasel you into buying something you don't need. We've got an older system, and he hasn't once pressured us to purchase a new one. I highly recommend Happel Mechanical!

They came to give me a bid in a timely manner. They communicate VERY well - always letting you know the status of your request.

We met Rick in 2019 when our 20 year old HVAC system was having a few issues. He advised on ways to prolong its life. Given the age, we ultimately decided to replace the system. Rick did an excellent installation job, giving us different options and explaining pros and cons etc. He comes out 2x per year to service the unit and we’ve had no issues. With this summer’s brutal heat, we did just have capacitor go out. I called Rick and he was there within the hour to fix the problem and get us cooled off again. He is always incredibly responsive and professional, and you can tell he genuinely cares about his customers. I highly recommend him for all things HVAC!

Happel put in an entirely new system earlier this year.Good price and we were glad to go into this 108+ degree summer with an efficient system. Like clockwork, they called and set an appointment for 6 month service and cleaning. Today, our drain line unexpectedly clogged up so I called them and Mr. Happel and a tech came out within an hour and had it fixed. You can’t ask for better service than that! Will continue to do business with this company.

I have used Happell Mechanical three times. It us my go to HVAC company. Very professional and knowledgeable.

He charged us over $600 to come out, add some refrigerant to our Samsung mini-split, determine there was a leak on the inside unit, and advise us it would need to be replaced. He then got defensive when I questioned the amount of the charge and never even got back to us with an estimate to replace the unit.

I can’t recommend Happel Mechanical enough. Rick went above and beyond answering numerous questions and taking the time to work with our schedule and budget. They are not the only hvac company I have worked with in Dallas but they are the only one I would recommend. I would give them 6 stars if that was an option.

I used Happel Mechanical to replace my ancient HVAC system. I had estimates from other companies but Rick's seemed the most honest and fair.

It only took a day after the estimate to accept and set a time for the next week to get it installed, which I thought was quick. Rick and his team arrived on time, were courteous, and kept me in the loop with everything they were doing. They replaced the A/C and furnace and removed my old system (not an easy task!). They also fixed some duct work that turned out I sorely needed, and even though it wasn't part of the estimate Rick gave me options to make sure it wasn't a problem.

The install was quick and I'm already seeing the benefits of the new system. It's like a brand new house! I'll definitely be calling Rick and his team at Happel for all my HVAC needs in the future.

Great service. Rick solved our problem quickly (he had the part needed on his truck). A couple of his techs did an annual tune-up on our HVAC system. Every contact with this local company was professional and courteous. We'll be using Rick's company from here on out.

AC event on July 4th with family in town. Expecting the get an answering service; however, pleasantly surprised when I reached Mr. Happel at 9 am on 7/4/2019. I provided my contact information and he advised he would text when he was on his way. I received his text at 11 am and he arrived approx. 30 mins later. I was greeted by a kind professional. He quickly determined the issue, gave tips\advise and resolution all in one hour. Mr. Happel charged me the "normal" diagnostics rate ($89) plus charges for other services rendered vs other quotes for "emergency" rate ($139). During our conversation, I found out he had already been out on a service call before mine. I believe I found an AC Superhero and will most like schedule my annual maintenance with Happel Mechanical.
